I am absolutely horrible at cooking and I don't think I will ever genuinely enjoy preparing food.
My mother is bad at cooking and my mother's mother was horrible as well. I grew up eating dry, unseasoned chicken and microwavable meals. My mom tried "teaching" me, which was very unsuccessful. I've never had an interest in cooking. Sometimes my mom and I will bake cupcakes and all I enjoy doing are cracking the eggs and icing 2 cakes and then I've had enough. As I've gotten older, I took a baking class in high school and that's when I felt the true panic that cooking/baking brings me. I somehow always end up reading the directions wrong and I'm really bad at "eyeballing" things, but after countless attempts, it always turns out...so bad.
However, I do love film. Whenever I see food in film, I feel like I have a new appreciation for it. I don't watch many food focused shows, but I have seen 3 out of the 4 episodes of Fat, Salt, Acid, Heat and it made me want to try to cook again. I have learned about food through nutritionists and cookbooks, but I feel like the best way I learn and understand is though film. I know this is not an instructional class, but I would like to have a better appreciation for cooking and understand why it is more than just "food".
My favorite movie (in general) is The Grand Budapest Hotel. I love this movie because it was the first film that got me interested in how cinema works because of how beautifully the movie was made. My favorite food movie is Chocolat. I love the strong female character of Vienne and the story of how she shakes up the high class society with her chocolate business. Honestly, have not watched that movie in years, I just remember it having an impact on me. I see it's on out schedule to watch in March, so I'm very excited to see it again!
